Miami-Dade Expressway or MDX
The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority or MDX is a State of Florida public agency responsible to operate, maintain, improve and expand five expressways in Miami-Dade County. The 5 expressways are-
- SR 924 or Gratigny Parkway
- SR 112 or Airport Expressway
- SR 836 or Dolphin Expressway
- SR 874 or Don Shula Expressway
- SR 878 or Snapper Creek Expressway
MDX was created in 1994 by the Florida Legislature and the Miami-Dade Commission to ensure that the tolls collected in the system would remain in the county and reinvested on the system. MDX is governed by a 9-member volunteer board Miami-Dade commission.

How MDX works
If a motor vehicle passes through an MDX toll zone and the system is not recognized a valid electronic transponder and the toll payment is not made by the device, a photographic image of the vehicle’s license plate is captured at the toll lane. The license plate provides all the required data to get the address of the vehicle’s registered owner and generate a notice.
To pay your tolls on MDX roads
The consumers have two options to pay their MDX tolls. One is SunPass which is the least expensive option with drivers savings an average of 15 cents at each tolling point. The SunPass users also save on other toll roads in Florida.
And another option is Toll By Plate. It works like SunPass without the transponder. Currently, the system is available only post-paid. With this Toll By Plate Account, the drivers will not receive the SunPass discount on the MDX roads.
